DEADWOOD (4-19-2012) – Mexico’s celebration of heritage and pride hits Deadwood’s Main Street on Saturday, May 5. Cinco de Mayo festivities will abound in Deadwood May 5, with activities for all ages.

Events include a kid’s fiesta, homemade salsa contest, Chihuahua costume contest, pepper-eating contest, chicken-splat bingo, soccer ball kick, tortilla toss, Mexican dance class, sidewalk sales, handcrafted piñata competition, fresh tamales and Mexican food-tasting stations and much more, including entertainment by Gordy Pratt and the Grupo Sueno Musical Band. Events kick off at 1 p.m. on May 5, and will continue throughout the evening.

Deadwood’s Cinco de Mayo organizers encourage everyone to enjoy the holiday on Deadwood’s Main Street. “This is a great opportunity for folks and families from the region to get a taste of Mexican traditions. We may be quite a ways from the origin of Cinco de Mayo in Puebla, Mexico, but we felt this was a chance for us to observe a lesser-known holiday in the historic community of Deadwood,” said Rhonda Van Den Eykel, Cinco de Mayo organizer. “The committee has put a lot of effort into organizing activities for all ages, so make plans to bring the entire family.”

Cinco de Mayo celebrates the Mexican Army’s defeat of French forces in Puebla, Mexico on May 5, 1862 – 15 years before gold was discovered in Deadwood in South Dakota’s Black Hills, and 15 years before Wild Bill Hickok came to Deadwood and met his own fate.

Deadwood’s Cinco de Mayo organizers seek participants for the various activities, including the handcrafted piñata contest. This contest has different age categories – adult, high school and elementary – and a number of prizes are up for grabs. To register for this contest, or the others such as the homemade salsa/pico de gallo contest, Chihuahua costume contest, hot pepper-eating contest or any other activity, call Rhonda Van Den Eykel at (605) 722-4975, or visit the Deadwood Chamber of Commerce website. You can also find a registration form HERE.

Was Seth truly reluctant to become the Deadwood Sheriff? Was E.B. FARNUM truly that “mousy”? Find out during the “The Truth vs. The Legends of DEADWOOD” one hour special presentation by Chad and Mary Beth!

– Feel free to join THE AGH CREW for dinner at one of many options in Deadwood… and the food is amazing EVERYWHERE!

9:30pm – 11pm – GHOST HUNT THE BULLOCK!
– We’ll gather in one of the most haunted rooms of the hotel, as well as the basement, for an hour and a half ghost hunt of the Bullock Hotel. And yes… as we said above, we had activity the last time we were here, so we already know it’s haunted

– Get ready to have a great time once again at the Ole’ No. 10 Saloon – the actual location where Wild Bill lost his life playing cards. In fact, the actual chair he was in is encased in glass above the front door!”
